Premature aging of the skin cannot be attributed to just one cause. Various environmental, hormonal and physiological factors have a profound effect on the skin. However, exposure to the sun’s UVA rays causes the maximum damage. UVA rays penetrate deepest into the skin and are often referred to as ‘aging rays’.
In high doses, these rays can cause darkening and pigmentation of the skin and accelerate the ageing process by damaging the underlying collagen, thus making the skin appear scaly, dry, wrinkled and leathery with dark patches.
Other contributory factors include stress, lack of sleep and smoking. Lack of sleep and stress also diminish the amount of other hormones within the body – like growth hormones which help nourish the skin and hair. Smoking or introducing toxic chemicals into the body increase the number of free radicals, accelerating the aging process and damaging the elasticity of the skin.
For this reason, people who smoke, drink and take drugs often look far older than they are. Most of the damage is visible but one may not be in a position to judge properly as the signs are very similar to regular skin wear and tear.
For example, damage due to UVA ray exposure can lead to spider veins on the face, age spots, leathery skin, fine wrinkles that appear only when stretched. A blotchy complexion and actinic keratosis (those rough, reddish patches of skin seen mostly around the temples and cheeks) are also indicators of premature ageing.
Similarly, drug abuse causes people to develop a deeply wrinkled and leathery skin. It is important to have your skin diagnosed and to follow remedial measures when you observe any of these signs of premature ageing.
Apples are great for preventing cell and tissue damage, wrinkles and aging. An apple a day not only keeps the doctor away but will also make you glow!
Note: Eat only organic apples!
Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A. They also contain vitamin K, potassium, folate, manganese, phosphorous, magnesium, vitamin E and zinc. Carrots will not only improve your vision but will make your skin look better too!
Ginger will not only speed up your metabolism and help you lose weight, but it is also rich in skin-supporting antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals which promote a smooth and clear skin.
Oranges and Lemons:
Citrus fruits have high vitamin C content. A glass of water with a little lemon juice is great for detoxing and thus it will make your skin clear and beautiful.
Cucumbers juice is an excellent source of silica, known to improve your complexion. Cucumbers are also very hydrating as they have a very high water content.
A properly hydrated skin is healthy and glowing. If you want better-looking skin, you should keep in mind the following things:
Requirements to prepare the drink:
- 1 apple
- 1 orange
- 3 carrots
- 1/2 Cucumber
- 1 tablespoon sliced Ginger
- 2 tablespoons lime/lemon
Simply just mix each ingredient in the given quantity in a jar or a glass, your drink is ready.
Take this drink, 1 hour before breakfast in the morning and if signs of early aging are visible then, consuming this drink twice a day is recommended.
Besides the natural drink, here are some additional tips that will also help for clear, young and glowing skin.
No more dairy:
Limit your dairy intake or preferably give it all up! Studies have shown that increased dairy consumption can lead to acne in some people. (1) Personally, every time I eat cheese for more than 2 days in a row, I start seeing the effects. Pimples start to appear, my skin loses its glow and an outbreak is about to happen. It’s best to give up dairy for good, but if don’t want to, at least eat it just 2-3 times a month.
No more sugar:
Refined sugar does a great deal of damage and not only to your skin but to your whole body as well! Replace refined white sugar with healthier sugar alternatives.
No more white bread:
It’s best to avoid all foods made with white flour. Choose the healthier options, made with whole grain flour. Eat less processed foods. Cook whole meals. It may be more difficult at first, especially if you’re not used to cooking from scratch, but the benefits will not only include healthier skin, but also an overall healthier body!
No fast food:
This is pretty much self-explanatory. All that fat will show up on your skin as well.
